From Our Minds to Yours
West Side Story

Happy 40th Birthday, Sesame Street!
For a recent class assignment, we had to come up with a metaphor that describes ourselves. I'll confess to a bad case of writer's block, so I turned to what was at the top of my mind at the moment (see my last post.) So, let me present to you three ways I'm like Sesame Street, a shortened version of the assignment. (No, this is not a joke.) And, like any quality post, it's brought to you by the letter "I!"

Big
From: Casual Friday
Well, this weekend, I shoot my next short video project. I will be holding auditions tomorrow for a little boy with a big imagination! My next short film will be about a boy who brings chalk drawings to life, and then has to run away from one of his own creations.

Hoosiers
From: Casual Friday
The title of this post isn't really referencing the 1986 feel-good film. (Though I'm making it a goal to name every blog post this year after a different movie -- I am living in L.A., after all.) Rather, it's about the people who I currently miss back at Taylor while I'm studying off-campus.

The Princess Diaries
From: Casual Friday
Ah, yes. What a good movie. No, I'm not talking about The Princess Diaries... though, as a 21-year-old straight male, I will proudly tell you that I love the movie, and even like the sequel. (C'mon... Julie Andrews singing next to Raven Symone? What's not to like?)

Sunset Boulevard (Catch-up 2 of 2)
From: Casual Friday
At the start of the semester, I was talking on my cell to a friend while driving. (I know, I know, Mom.) She told me that she had just pulled into a gas station near campus, and I told her that I was stopped at an intersection. I looked up at the street sign through my windshield. "Umm...," I started, "I'm stopped at Sunset Boulevard."

How the West was Won (Catch-Up 1 of 2)
From: Casual Friday
Welcome back to another school year! It's absolutely surreal to me that this is my last "start of a new school year." And, though the name of this blog remains "Casual Friday," it'd probably be more accurate to label it "High-Strung Friday" as I begin the dreaded senior-year job search.

Got an iPhone!
From: ETC Academic Technology
With my Centennial Wireless contract expiring I decided to discard my Palm Treo and switch to AT&T and the new iPhone. It was waiting for me when I returned home Thursday evening from the BbWorld'09 conference in Washington D.C.
Since the iPhone came out two years ago I've been watching it. Based on my experience the past 3 days I really don't think it's been overhyped. Over the past year-and-a-half my 3 lb. mobile laptop has changed the way I operate. The iPhone is going to change my modus operandi even more.
It is pretty amazing having one pocket device that functions for all these purposes: 1) phone, 2) email, 3) calendar, 4) web browser, 5) camera, 6) video camera, 7) music player, 8) video player, 9) e-reader, 10) GPS.

Gearing up for the ICI Technology Summit
From: ETC Academic Technology
Taylor University is hosting this year's 6th Annual Independent Colleges of Indiana Instructional Technology Summit, to be held August 14. Over 200 participants (instructional technologists, faculty, librarians, and technical support folks) will be attending from the 31 ICI schools.
An excellent conference has been planned, including a keynote by Sarah "Intellagirl" Robbins, nationally recognized expert in social media who will speak on the topic, "The Seven Deadly Sins of Technology in Higher Education: Exposing Our Sins Against Innovation". Sarah is a fascinating lady. In her own words, "I'm a researcher, an academic, a writer, a speaker, a marketer, a mom, and a geek." Creation and Science
From: ETC Academic Technology
I am a committed Christian. I believe the Bible is the inspired word of God. For years I have struggled to reconcile the biblical account of creation with the so-called indisputable evidence for evolution and an old universe. When you read the Genesis account it so clearly describes a process of creation by a God who spoke, and out of nothing brought life in all its forms -- plants, trees, sun, moon, fish, birds, animals, and man. About the time I convince myself that that is really what I believe, I get hammered by a myriad voices (from atheists to born-again Christians) who scoff at the possibility of a young earth fashioned by a Creator.
