Taylor welcomes Visiting Christian Scholar Dr. Jeremy Begbie November 9-11
11.04.2009
Renowned Christian scholar/musician/aesthetician/author Dr. Jeremy Begbie, will serve a guest music residency at Taylor University from Nov. 9-11.
Considered one of the foremost thinkers on theology and the arts, Dr. Begbie is known for his dynamic and interactive presentations.
His visit is a highlight of an extensive program of events at Taylor scheduled this Fall in conjunction with the international traveling exhibition "Charis: Boundary Crossings--Neighbors Strangers Family Friends," which is in the galleries of the Modelle Metcalf Visual Arts Center on the Taylor campus from Oct. 30-Dec. 4.
Begbie's residency is part of the Staley Distinguished Christian Scholar Lecture Series. His visit will open with a faculty recital of "Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time)" by Olivier Messiaen, on Monday evening, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Butz Carruth Recital Hall.
"Quatuor" was first written and performed in a German prison camp during World War II.
Begbie's residency will continue Tuesday, Nov. 10, when he presents "Subversive Hope: Embodying and Re-Imagining God's New World Through the Arts," at 7:30 p.m., in the Butz Carruth Recital Hall. In this lecture, Begbie will explore the ways in which the arts can help us re-imagine the future - not some future we create, but the new creation God has promised and is bringing about here and now. There will be extensive use of visual material and live performance at the piano.
The conclusion of Begbie's residency comes at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 11, as he presents "Sound Mix: Live the Difference," in the Rediger Chapel/Auditorium.
